Varsity baseball tops Indians, 11-1.

The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team won their 9th game of the year by defeating the CV Indians 11-1 in 6 innings last night. Dan Saniga pitched a complete game for the win by striking out 9 and allowing 4 hits in the contest.

Offensively, Wellsboro pounded out 13 hits including 5 extra base hits. Leading Wellsboro was Dylan Prough going 4-4 with 2 triples and 4 RBIs. Ben Shaw went 2-3 with a solo home run. Brandon Owlett went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, a double, and a triple.

During the 5th inning, a frightening play developed which left both teams passive. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Prough hit a long gap shot between left and center field. Ryan Freeman and Luke Plummer of CV each broke on the fly ball. Both players read the angle of the ball and sprinted towards the gap. Each realizing they could not make a play without diving for the ball, both players dove simultaneously giving it all their effort. The players collided in mid-air with a head-to-head collision that left both players motionless on the ground and the ball skirting to the fence.

"It was one of the scariest scenes I've ever seen in a baseball game," said head coach Philip Prough. "You knew both players were hurt and you suspected it could be serious as neither player moved a muscle. Dr. Shaw and our athletic trainer Alexis Knowlton responded immediately to the players. We're fortunate to have those people available."

Two ambulances were called. The players were secured and taken to the hospital with concussion symptoms. Both were responsive by the time the ambulances arrived although Plummer was unconscious for a little time.

"I know Luke and I've known their family for a long time. He's a competitor and I know he'll be back. I don't know Ryan as well, but I suspect he is competitive too. Knowing the effort they gave reflects that. At that point, winning a baseball game is secondary to everyone playing, including us. On behalf of Wellsboro and our team, we wish Luke and Ryan a quick recovery."

With the win, Wellsboro improves their record to 9-4 (7-1 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Friday, May 11, as they host Williamson.
