A day after their biggest win of the year, the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team lost 7-3 to Canton on Saturday, April 16.
Wellsboro scored 2 runs in the first inning and held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the second. Canton tied the game at 3-3 in their half of the second, then took the lead for good with 3 runs in the third. The Warriors then added an insurance run in the sixth to pick up the win.
Senior James Mundy started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. Sophomore Dalton Prough pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed 3 runs (all earned) and earned the loss, and sophomore Johnny Rowland pitched the last 3 innings. The three combined for 5 strikeouts, 7 walks and 1 hit batter.
Senior Larry Walters was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hornets, and senior Dawson Prough was 2-for-4 with a double.
The loss drops the Varsity team to 2-3 on the year. The team will be back in action tomorrow as they host Cowanesque Valley.
The Middle School team was also in action against Wyalusing, where they picked up a 16-11 win to improve to 2-1. Billy Lechler, Carson Davis, Tyler Hancock, Silas Wagaman, Zach Singer, Ty Morral, and Jacob Trowbridge all had hits. Clayton Orsborn (2), Lechler (2), Davis (3), Hancock, Mann, Trowbridge, Wagaman (2), Lucas Citrino (2), Singer, Morral, and Austin Richards added runs on the day. Lechler, Davis, Richards, and Morral all pitched on the day, combining for 10 strikeouts and allowed only three hits.
The team will be back in action on Tuesday, April 19 at Cowanesque Valley.
From Thursday, the Wellsboro JV team split two games with North Penn-Mansfield. The Hornets won the first game 11-4 and lost the second 8-4. The team will return to the field on Thursday, April 21 in Athens.
