The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team had their 4-game win streak snapped in a 5-1 loss to Jersey Shore on Saturday, April 21.

The Hornets struggled from the plate the entire game, only picking up three hits. Wellsboro fell behind 2-0 after the second inning, then found themselves down 5-0 after the Bulldogs added 3 more runs in the sixth inning.

Wellsboro managed to get on the scoreboard and avoid being shutout with a run in the top of the seventh.

Senior Dalton Prough doubled to reach base and scored as senior Johnny Rowland reached and got to second base on an error.

Wellsboro's other two hits came from junior Cam Tennis and sophomore Carson Davis in back-to-back at bats in the fourth.

Prough started on the mound and went 6 and 1/3 innings in a losing effort. Prough allowed 2 hits and struck out 5, but gave up 6 walks and hit 2 batters. Rowland pitched the final 2/3 of an inning in relief.

"We had another strong performance from Dalton on the mound but couldn't deliver results," said head coach Philip Prough. "They got a timely hit when we didn't. We left 10 on base today. We were flat at the plate and didn't have enough good approaches. You can't afford that against good pitching. We need to learn that and if we do, we'll be fine. But even with that, we out hit them. As I told the boys, I'd rather play against a playoff caliber teams and loose a good game than play a low quality team and win big. So todays contest will help us down the road."

Wellsboro (5-2, 5-1 NTL Large School Division) hosts Sugar Valley Rural Charter on Monday, April 23.
