The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team edged Sayre 4-2 in NTL cross-over action on Tuesday, April 24.
After two scoreless innings the Hornets scored all four of their runs in the third inning. Junior Taynton Repard drew a walk to lead off the inning followed by a single by senior Dalton Prough. After a walk by sophomore Billy Lechler, sophomore Carson Davis singled to knock in a run, junior Cam Tennis hit into a fielder's choice to bring a run home, and senior Caleb Tennis doubled.
Repard, Prough, Lechler, and Cam Tennis all scored in the inning to put the Hornets up 4-0.
The Redskins avoided the shutout in the fourth inning as Nate Sweet led off with a base hit and later came around to score to cut it to 4-1. Later in the fifth Zach Moore led off with a single and scored on a sac fly by Connor Hanafin to cut it to 4-2.
Wellsboro held on from there on out to pick up the win.
"It was a great team win tonight versus a tough team. Our guys brought energy to the field and showed what they can do when focused," said head coach Philip Prough. "A big defensive and offensive night. Cam played great in center diving for catches and taking good angles. Johnny Rowland did his usual - throw strikes, dont walk kids and let his defense do the work. Sayre is a good team. If you beat them, you've earned it. We brought our bats and hit the ball hard. With 10 hits in any game, I like our chances. Even so, we left 13 runners on base. So we keep getting our chances no matter who we play. Sooner or later, the odds have to swing in our favor and if so, we'll post big scores. All in all, a good win and I'm hopeful this will propel our momentum for the coming weeks."
Lechler led the Hornets at the plate going 2-for-3, Prough and Caleb Tennis were both 2-for-4, Davis was 1-for-3, and Rowland and Cam Tennis both went 1-for-4.
Rowland went the distance on the mound for his fourth win this season. He allowed six hits, two runs (both earned), a walk, and struck out 5 on 90 pitches.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 7-2 (6-1 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Monday, April 30 against Cowanesque Valley.
