Hornets fall to Athens after 2-run 6th inning.

2 runs by the Athens Wildcats in the bottom of the 6th inning propelled them to a 3-2 win over the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team on Thursday, May 6.

"It was a tough loss but we will have to move on to our next game," head coach Steve Adams said. "We control our destiny."

Athens took an early 1-0 lead after the 1st inning but the Hornets quickly responded with runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. The Hornets tied the game with a run in the 2nd by junior Isaac Keane, who scored when junior Dylan Abernathy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Then in the 3rd Wellsboro took the lead on a solo home run by junior Darryn Callahan. The solo shot was Callahan's fifth of the season, putting him 3rd all-time in Wellsboro baseball history for home runs in a single season.

The Hornets held onto that lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Wildcats scored two runs.

Wellsboro had just 4 hits on the afternoon, one each by Callahan, sophomore Blake Hamblin, sophomore Cameron Brought, and senior Brock Hamblin. Brock Hamblin threw 6 innings in the loss, allowing 3 runs (all earned) on 7 hits with 4 strikeouts.

The loss drops the Hornets' record to 7-6 (7-4 NTL Large School Division). The Hornets are back in action at Towanda later this afternoon.
