The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 9-3 win over Cowanesque Valley on Monday, May 9.
The Hornets started quick, scoring 4 early runs to give themselves the lead. Junior Caden Smith drew a lead off walk, followed by senior Conner Adams getting hit by a pitch. Fellow senior Cameron Brought also drew a walk, loading the bases for senior Blake Hamblin. Hamblin hit into a fielders choice, but still drove in Smith and Adams to put the Hornets up 2-0. Hamblin would later score, along with freshman Marek Mascho, putting the Hornets up 4-0.
Wellsboro added a single run in the bottom of the 2nd to increase their lead to 5-0. Adams led off with a base hit, then would later score, putting Wellsboro up 5-0.
Cowanesque got a run back in the 3rd to cut the lead to 5-1, however the Hornets' offense produced more runs in the middle innings.
In the 4th, Brought smacked his 2nd home run of the season, a 2-run shot scoring both him and Adams, making it 7-1. Later in the 5th, sophomore Gabe Sprouse reached on an error to start the inning, followed by a double from sophomore Lucas Cuneo. Both would score on a base knock by sophomore Alec Magli, giving the Hornets a commanding 9-1 lead.
Cowanesque Valley scored twice in the 7th, but it was too little too late.
The Hornets had 9 hits on the afternoon, led by Cuneo's 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a double and 3 RBIs. Adams finished 2-for-3 and scored 3 runs, Brought and Smith were both 1-for-3 and scored a run, and Sprouse and Magli were both 1-for-4 with Sprouse scoring a run. Hamblin earned the win on the mound, going 5 innings allowing just one run on 2 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Brought allowed 2 runs in one and two thirds innings of work while walking 5 and striking out two, and Mascho came on for the final batter.
The win improves the Hornets to 8-7 (7-5 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action this afternoon at Athens.
