WYSOX - In a pitcher's dual Towanda's Mason Roof came out on top.
The Black Knight senior struck out 12 while allowing three hits, five walks and no runs in six innings of work to push Towanda past Sayre 2-0 in NTL East baseball action Friday.
"It was good to win," Towanda coach Bill Sexton said. "We haven't been playing too well recently, I thought the kids really showed up tonight."
Zach Ripic came on for the save, pitching a perfect seventh with two strikeouts.
"Obviously the key tonight was from the mound," Sexton remarked. "The pitching stepped up tonight. We also made a couple decent defensive plays."
Roof's counterpart Jared Donovan went five innings, striking out one while allowing four walks, three hits and two earned runs in the loss.
The Black Knight scored in the bottom of the fifth as Brandon Dinelli led off with a walk. Zach Ripic then hit a line shot deep into the left field corner which scored Dinelli.
Roof moved Ripic over to third on a fielder's choice, followed by Austin Markel bringing him in on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Knights.
That's all they would need as Sayre only threatened in two innings.
In the third they had bases loaded with two outs but Roof struck out Donovan to end the threat. Then in the fifth they had runners on first and second with one but Roof worked his way out of the jam again, striking out the next two Redskin batters.
Nick Skerpon went 2-for-3 for Sayre while Kyle Lake had the other hit.
For the Knights Ripic, Markel and Grady Robinson had the three hits.
