WYSOX - Nick Place had a three-run home run in a five-run fifth inning as Towanda picked up a 12-5 win over Cowanesque Valley in NTL baseball action on Thursday.
Down 4-1 in the top of the fourth CV had a four-run inning to take a 5-4 lead.
However, Towanda answered back with three of their own in the fourth and then the big five-run fifth to break the game open.
Towanda had taken the early three-run lead in the third when Noah Huff led off with a triple and scored on a ground out by Jared Lines. Sawyer Strope singled and stole a base and after a flyout Dylan Bates and Tristan James had back-to-back run-scoring doubles.
CV took the lead in the fourth as they had their own big inning, keyed by a Tyler Melko home run.
After Towanda got three in the fourth to go up 7-5 the Black Knights started the fifth inning with Landon Brown walking and stealing second. Devin Patel then walked and Ethan Barto reached on an error, scoring Brown.
Barto stole second and Noah Huff walked to load the bases. Jared Lines hit into a fielder's choice that retired Huff and scored Patel and Lines stole second putting runners on second and third. Place then delivered a three-run home run, his first of the season.
"It was good to get the bats going," Towanda coach Bill Sexton said. "It's two nights in a row. We got the hits last night, 13 last night and picked up seven more today. We are starting to hit the ball hard. Now, maybe we can get a little momentum going. We just aren't hitting on all cylinders yet. There is still a lot of season left, but we are halfway through it now. We will see, the jury is still out on where we will be."
Huff had a triple and a run scored in the game and Lines had two RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.
Strope had a hit, a run, an RBI and a steal and Place had the three-run home run.
Bates had two hits, with a double, three RBI, a run and a stolen base and James had the double and an RBI.
Terrick Vargason scored a run, Brown had the stolen base and a run, Patel scored two runs and Barto had a hit, an RBI, a steal and two runs scored.
"I think both Nick (Place) and (Dylan) Bates are starting to hit the ball hard," Sexton said. "Once they start hitting the ball hard good things are going to happen. They both have proven track records."
Ty Johnson got the win on the mound, striking out three, walking none and allowing six hits and five runs, three earned. He is 2-0 on the year. Lines struck out none, walked one and allowed two hits and no runs in three innings for his first career save.
"I was pleased with both of the kids," Sexton said. "I thought Ty Johnson gave us three solid innings, the longest he's gone. He lost a little location in the fourth inning and gave up a couple hits to some good hitters. We had to get through tonight with those guys and save (Tristan) James for tomorrow night and give (Dylan) Bates and (Sawyer) Strope a night off after pitching last night."
Melko had two hits, with the home run, two RBI and a run scored and Brandon Whitesell had two hits, with a double.
Brendan Bell had a double and Connor Calaman, Brandon McClean and Casey McLaughlin had hits for CV.
Calaman worked four innings, striking out one, walking four and allowing six hits and seven runs, six earned. Bell allowed three runs, two earned, on three walks in 1/3 of an inning and Melko struck out two, allowed one hit and two runs, one earned, in 1 2/3 innings.
