EAST TROY - In a back and forth game Troy got the last laugh in their 5-4 win over Hughesville to advance in the District IV, Class AA baseball quarterfinals Friday.
This will be the first time in eight years that the Trojans have reached the semi-finals and play at Bowman Field.
"It was a total team effort," Troy coach Steve Mattocks said. "Excellent defense, the pitchers threw strikes and the kids hit the ball. The only downside was we left the bases loaded twice. The biggest thing was we had solid defense."
The Trojans had eight hits in the game, three of them extra base hits.
Isaac Havens and Brandon Mattocks both had triples while Kyle Jackson had a double. Havens and Jackson had 2-RBI each while Mattocks and Jackson both scored.
Kyle Schucker, Brock Schucker, Dane Smith, Mitchel Morse and Collin Binford also had hits.
Jarod Mattocks, Clark Jackson and Binford all scored with Morse getting an RBI.
On the mound Kyle Schucker started and went the first three innings for the no decision. He struck out two while allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs.
Havens went the final four innings for the win, striking out two while allowing two walks, three hits and two earned runs.
"Havens pitched a heck of a ball game," remarked Steve Mattocks.
Zach Fry and Trey Smith were both 3-for-4 to lead Hughesville. Smith also had 3-RBI.
Fry scored the loss as the Spartans used four different pitchers.
Brandon Mattocks led off the game with a triple and scored off a Kyle Jackson double in the first.
Hughesville took a 2-1 lead after the top of the third but the Trojans added two more in the bottom half of the inning as Jarod Mattocks drew a lead off walk and eventually scored on a Havens ground out.
Then four straight hits with two outs led to Clark Jackson scoring as he courtesy ran for Kyle Schucker.
Up 3-2 Hughesville added two more in the fourth to make it 4-3.
In the bottom half of the inning Havens tripled in Kyle Jackson to knot the game at 4-all.
Then in the bottom of the sixth Collin Binford led off with a 2-strike hit followed by Brandon Mattocks sacrificing him over. After an intentional walk to Jarod Mattocks Kyle Jackson hit a ground ball to the shortstop. The Spartan defender threw it into right field and Binford scored the go ahead and winning run.
The Trojans will face Line Mountain, who were a 3-2 winner over South Williamsport, next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Troy played Line Mountain twice this season and the two teams split.
An eight run second inning proved to be the difference in the District IV, Class AA quarterfinal baseball game Friday.
Both teams opened the game with one run each in the first inning.
The Defenders went up 9-1 in the second and made it 10-1 with a run in the third.
In the top of the sixth the Hornets cut it to 10-4 with three runs but in the bottom half of the inning Warrior Run shut the door with three runs of their own.
Nick Levindoski had a double for Wellsboro, who had five hits in the game.
Sean Morehart and Tyler Meehan both went 2-for-3 to lead Warrior Run while Lloyd Minium had a 3-run home run.
Warrior Run will face Loyalsock at 7 p.m. at Bowman Field next Tuesday.
