2013 Sullivan County vs. Montgomery BaseballA big second inning propelled Sullivan County past division rivals Montgomery in a 5-3 Heartland Conference baseball win Tuesday.

The victory qualifies the Griffins for district play for the second year in a row but it goes much deeper than that.

"In my eight years this is the first time we ever beat Montgomery," Sullivan coach Walt Tubach said. "So it was doubly sweet here, getting to districts and beating Montgomery for the first time. The kids worked hard. It's just a wonderful feeling to be there with them."

This is the first time ever Tubach has had a team make districts in back to back years.

Montgomery took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second but the Griffins rattled off four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Red Raiders cut it to 4-3 in the fifth but Sullivan answered with another run in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

Derek Farrell went 2-for-3 with a home run, 3-RBI and a run scored to lead Sullivan while Kelby Mullen was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.

Barry Heinrich was also 2-for-4 with a run while Zach Meyer was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Tom Blasi and Jake Gavitt crossed home for Sullivan.

Mullen earned the win, going five innings to strike out two while allowing one walk, five hits and three earned runs. Meyer scores the save, going the final two innings to strike out four while allowing one walk and one hit.

Montgomery ace Zach Worthington scores the loss, going all seven innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.

"He's a great pitcher," Tubach said about Worthington. "He has a variety of pitches to shut you down and we had to change our game plan a little to stay with him. We learn each game what we need to do different."

The 10-0 Griffins will host Muncy Friday.
