Simmons strikes out a record 17 in Tioga's win.

TIOGA CENTER, N.Y. - With his 17 strikeouts on Friday the Tigers' Peter Simmons wrote his name into the Tioga record book one more time.

This time it is a familiar name with which Simmons will share a record as his big performance tied his dad, Randy Simmons', single-game strikeout record set in the mid 1980s.

"It was absolutely one of the best pitching performances I think I have ever seen," Tioga coach Bob Seymour said. "To be honest, I'm keeping an eye on the pitch count because of the weather and he just seemed to be getting stronger as the game went on. During the game I'm not even counting strikeouts and he just said he wanted the shutout when he went out in the seventh. He still was under 100 pitches with 17 strikeouts. It was hard to find where he even went to three balls on anyone except the guy he walked in the fourth."

Simmons allowed back-to-back hits to start the game, then allowed one hit and one walk the rest of the way.

What made the performance more impressive is that it came against a solid Newark Valley team.

"Going into the game I was talking to the boys, they are 6-6 but they have been playing everyone tough," Seymour said. "They have been playing Edison tough. They have been playing Notre Dame tough. They have been playing Waverly tough. When Peter gives up two singles back-to-back you are thinking we are in for a dog fight. Then he strikes out the side and you could just see that it almost motivated him and got him going." Tioga scored four runs in the first and added six more in the third and fourth to pick up the win.
