Hornets Close Out Regular Season With 10-5 Win Over Hughesville

Wellsboro finished their 2026 baseball regular season by doubling up Hughesville, 10-5, on the road Tuesday afternoon.
The win is the Hornets' 13th in a row to close out the season as the top seed in the District IV Class 3A playoff race.
The game was scoreless until the top of the 3rd when the Hornets plate three runs by sophomore Gabe Cuneo, senior Marek Mascho and junior Coen Tennis. The Hornets then added two more runs in the 4th by sophomores Kody Enck and Griffin Morral, increasing the lead to 5-0.
Hughesville got one run across the plate in the bottom of the 4th to cut the lead to 5-1, however the Hornets' offense kept the foot on the gas pedal to close out the game.
Wellsboro scored twice in the 5th, once in the 6th, and twice in the 7th. The Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the 5th and twice in the bottom of the 7th.
In the 5th Morral doubled to score Enck and freshman Maddon Mascho. Tennis scored again in the 6th on a double from freshman Gage Baltzley, and Morral and sophomore Reed Richardson scored in the 7th.
Tennis finished 4-for-4 with 3 doubles, 2 runs scored and an RBI to lead Wellsboro on the afternoon. Morral, Baltzley and Richardson were all 2-for-4, with Morral scoring 2 runs and driving in a pair of runs. Baltzley had an RBI and Richardson scored a run. Marek Mascho (1-for-5, 2 RBIs) and junior Max Mascho (1-for-4, 1 RBI) made up the rest of the Hornets' 14 hits.
Marek Mascho got the win on the mound in 4 innings of work. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 5 walks and 6 strikeouts. Baltzley came on in relief, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout in 3 innings of work.
With Athens defeating Troy, 2-1 in 10 innings, the Hornets and Wildcats will share the NTL Large School Division championship, with both teams having one league loss.
Wellsboro (17-2, 14-1 NTL Large School Division) will be back in action once the District IV playoffs begin.
