Hornets Surge Past Canton Thanks To Big Fourth Inning

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team scored 15 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to break open a 5-5 game to defeat Canton 20-5 in four innings Thursday.

The Hornets have now won seven straight games and have outscored their opponents 80-19 in that stretch. The last two games alone the Hornets have outscored their opponents 38-5.

Canton struck first in the top of the 1st to take a early lead, however the Hornets scored 4 in the bottom half of the inning. With two on senior Cameron Owlett singled to center to score sophomores Gabe Cuneo and Griffin Morral. In the next at bat a single by freshman Gage Baltzley scored Owlett and junior Max Mascho. The Warriors rallied to tie the game at 4-all in the top of the 2nd with 3 runs, but again the Hornets answered back int he bottom half of the inning to retake the lead.

Morral drew a walk to lead off the inning then advanced to 2nd as Cuneo grounded out. Morral made it to third on another ground out then scored as junior Coen Tennis reached on an error to put the Hornets back in front at 5-4.

Canton tied the game back up with a run in the top of the 4th before the Hornets' exploded for 15 in the bottom half of the inning.

Wellsboro had 7 hits on the day made up of individual hits by Morral, senior Marek Mascho, Tennis, Max Mascho, Owlett, Baltzley and sophomore Reed Richardson.

Marek Mascho started on the mound and threw two innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Junior Syler Pietrzyk came on in relief to pick up the win, allowing one run on 2 hits.

Bailey Gardner went 3-for-3 and scored 3 runs to lead Canton.

Wellsboro improves to 11-2 (10-1 NTL Large School Division) and hosts South Williamsport in non-league action Saturday afternoon.
