Hornets Defeat Towanda Second Time In Two Days

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team won their second straight game against Towanda in as many days following a 7-1 win Friday afternoon.

"Good road win today against a tough Towanda team," head coach Kyle Smith said. "Getting off to a quick start was great for us today and the home-run by Coen Tennis was the key early. After that, Gage Baltzley continued to compete on the mound and our defense played a solid game as well. We are moving in the right direction."

A three-run home run by junior Coen Tennis in the 1st inning led to a 4-run inning by the Hornets, putting them in control of the game from the jump. Wellsboro added a run in the top of the 3rd as freshman Gage Baltzley grounded out to score junior Max Mascho to make it 5-0. The Black Knights scored their lone run in the bottom of the 3rd to cut the lead to 5-1, but that's all the Hornet defense would allow.

The game remained 5-1 until the 5th when senior Cameron Owlett doubled to left, scoring Max Mascho. Later in the 6th sophomore Reed Richardson scored as senior Marek Mascho reached base on an error.

Baltzley went the distance on the mound for the win, allowing the one run on 5 hits with a walk and 8 strikeouts.

Brad Assante threw 4 innings for Towanda in a losing effort, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Boom Thompson threw the final 3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits with a strikeout.

Thompson also had two hits and scored the Black Knights' run.

Wellsboro produced 10 hits in the game, led by Owlett, who finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs. Richardson went 3-for-3, sophomore Gabe Cuneo and Max Mascho, along with Tennis' homer, made up the remaining hits. Max Mascho also scored 3 times in the game.

The win is the Hornets' 5th in a row (9-2, 8-1 NTL Large School Division). The team returns to action Tuesday at Wyalusing.
