Senior Marek Mascho, the John Antoine Prevost Male Athlete of the Year for 2025-26, announced he will continue his baseball career at Elmira College back on May 18.
The Hornets' 3rd all-time career hits leader (109) plans on enrolling in their nursing (BSN) four-year program. Mascho was also considering Juniata and Lycoming College to play football, but Lycoming didn't offer the nursing program.
"I've always thought of doing something in the medical field and with nursing you can go into a wide variety of other occupations afterwards," Mascho said. "I really wanted to stick with baseball. Football is a little hard on the body and I wasn't sure how four years of college football would be on the body."
Mascho reached out back in the fall and the rest was history.
"I sent them an email with all of my stats and some film and we started talking after that. We stayed in contact throughout the winter and I visited a handful of times. I've interacted with a few of the team members, one of them gave me a tour and I've seen a few on campus here and there. The school is great, I really like the area, they have great facilities and I like the program that 'Coach G' (Anthony Gongalves) is trying to build."
Other factors that drew Mascho to Elmira was its proximity to home and its size.
"In the spring its beautiful out there. It's close to home and it's small so I'll get to know all of my teachers and professors, and lunch is great. Lunch is very important. I need good food, " Mascho joked.
Mascho has been at, or near the top of Wellsboro's stat leader boards his entire career. As a freshman he was 4th on the team in hits (24), moved up to 2nd on the team as a sophomore with 21, and has led the team his junior and senior years, producing 64 combined hits the last two years. Through his career he compiled 23 doubles, 4 home runs, drew 24 walks, and a .396 batting average. He also had a .446 on base percentage and a .524 slugging percentage. In the field he made 94 put outs and 86 assists in 213 total changes (.845).
For Hornet skipper Kyle Smith, Mascho is his first athlete to play at the next level.
"Marek has been one of the most high school baseball players I've been around. I know what to expect from Marek at practice, I know what to expect from him in a game, he's what I call a 'gamer.' He show up every day, he's a quiet leader but he works hard and has contributed to this program in countless ways. He leads by example more than anything. He's a great kid and as a coach he's exactly what you would want from any student-athlete in any sport."
Mascho has played a variety of positions during his tenure on the diamond for Wellsboro, which Smith thinks will give him the edge going forward.
"I don't know exactly where he projects defensively at the next level. I have some ideas. He's played 2nd base, shortstop, 3rd base, he's been kind of a backup catcher for us, whether he knows it or not. He's pitched a lot of innings for us over the course of his career, but he's willing to do whatever, whenever. That will certainly lead to his success at the next level. His hitting has always set him apart from other players, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him hitting for a high average and fitting into the lineup wherever he's needed. He'll contribute in a positive way, no matter what the circumstances."
